Good friends are like stars, you don’t always see them but you know they are always there. – Old Saying
Regardless of age or life stage, spending time with my girlfriends is something I value and need very much. These sisterhoods feed my heart and soul and are so beautiful to me and so necessary. My current read or should I say listen, via Audible, is Michelle Obama’s book Becoming. She talks specifically about the importance of having good girlfriends and recounted many afternoons where her and her gal-pals dissected the days’ events over juice and sandwiches. I too have felt the ongoing blessing of having a bad ass LADY SQUAD.
Friends I’ve known since childhood have an extra special place in my heart and the bond we share is not replaceable by adult friendships. I think it’s because of the shared history and how far that history stretches. They know my siblings, my parents, my pets. We grew up together spending time at each other’s houses and running around backyards. We’ve gone through many of life’s milestones together and shared so many important moments: making the cheer squad, boyfriends, starting high school, losing our virginity, broken hearts, learning to drive, going away to college, first jobs, learning to budget (I’m still learning), getting our first apartments, weddings, kids, divorces, buying houses, investing in 401k’s, aging parents, losing parents and the list goes on.
My LADY SQUAD includes Jessica, Janene, and Kristia, whom I have known since 3rd grade, 5th grade and 9th grade respectively. We don’t talk all the time but when we do it’s like no time has passed. We just pick right up wherever we left off. A few years ago we starting getting together over MLK Day weekend. Year one was a fun Saturday at Sea World, year two we added on dinner, dancing and hotel sleepover, and this year, week took FULL advantage of the 3 day weekend. We took a short road trip to St. Augustine and spent the whole weekend exploring and making memories. We slept late, drank mimosa’s, walked on the beach, went wine tasting, did some shopping and ate yummy food. We left behind kids, husbands, fiancé’s, dogs and just relaxed in the company of each other. We told stories, reminisced and talked about our current chapters or our next chapters.
I’m so blessed to have friends in my life whom I have shared more than 30 years of life experiences and memories with. They are priceless gems and I love them more than words. This year was extra special for me because I finally got to invite them all to be bridesmaids in my wedding.
Even though we’ve all changed so much and life has taken us on incredibly different paths we always come back home because of our love for each other! I can’t wait to do to it again next year. Cheers to the PAST, PRESENT, and FUTURE.
