Vacay Vibes

April 22, 2019

My vacation diet can be described as an unchaperoned adult at an open bar. #memegenerator

Those vacay vibes are running through my blood. I am fantasizing about the crystal, clear ocean water. I can hear the waves crashing into the shore. I can feel the powder white sand between my toes. Historically I’ve been known to pack on the pounds when I travel, especially if I’m going on vacation. When I travel for work it seems to be a bit more manageable but it can still be a danger zone. I like to throw caution to the wind and live young and wild and free and that means not working out and eating and drinking whatever the HELL I want.

JESUS TAKE THE WHEEL … because I need someone to save me from myself.

I always start my vacations with the best of intentions. Then it happens. I’m going through the airport, cute bags in tow, and suddenly I don’t want homemade coffee with almond milk. I want a Starbucks Latte and make it a Venti. While we’re at it, add some vanilla. Just like that. And who wants a protein shake when you can grab Dunkin Donuts or Chick-Fil-A near your gate? And did I mention the BISCOFF cookies courtesy of Delta ?? Sweet, sugary, buttery . . . OMG it’s like heaven in my MOUTH.

STOP THE BUS Beth Corbley, I say to myself, you have worked too hard on your 4 Week Vegan Shred to throw it all away now.

I have a 5-day trip planned to Siesta Key and I know I’m going to need a new approach if I’m going to stay on track. I currently suffer from a little thing called FOMO … FEAR OF MISSING OUT … thank you Vanderpump Rules for educating me on this as I didn’t know this thing had a name. So in this next installment of my TRUTH BOMB series, I will be serving up some cold hard truths about staying on track while on vacation, that quite frankly I’m really telling myself and sharing with you along the way.

MYTH: I’ll just wing it . . .

TRUTH BOMB … First, it is scientifically proven that we are always more successful with a plan. Think ahead! Bring your own food. Make a sandwich for the plane or slice up some fruit or veggies so you don’t get crappy (not to mention overpriced) airport food. Cliff Bars, LARA Bars, KIND Bars heck even granola bars are individually wrapped, portable and travel oh so well. l also I like apple slices, celery & peanut butter or carrots & hummus. Another lifesaver for me has been traveling with my protein shaker cup. I portion out my protein powder and PB2 in individual Ziploc baggies and toss them in my suitcase, so no matter what I always have breakfast.

MYTH: I’d cook my own food on vacay but I want to eat local and try things I can’t get at home . . .

TRUTH BOMB . . . you can still enjoy new flavors and tasty local treats in moderation. I recommend picking one meal or one restaurant where you will allow yourself to deviate. Other than that, hit the grocery store for your food and snacks as it will save your waistline and your wallet. And by the way, there are many other ways to experience the local culture outside of just food. Try to re-frame!

MYTH: I don’t want to hit the gym and work out because I’m on vacation . . .

TRUTH BOMB . . . you don’t have the hit the gym to get activity. Walk as much as you can to as many places as you can. Fitting in the gym is great if you have access, but if not, get creative. Eric & I recently traveled to New Orleans and easily clocked 10,000+ steps daily from walking to all the sites … that’s 5 miles of walking without hitting the gym. Woot Woot !!

MYTH: But Beth, I want lots of fruity cocktails with umbrellas in them . . .

TRUTH BOMB . . . I want a million dollars but we all can’t get what we want. Ok but seriously, lay off the fruity cocktails. They are empty calories and will bloat and dehydrate you. And if you’re over 25 you’ll probably end up with a wicked hangover. I recently learned that not drinking or drinking less is not quite as terrible and awful as I imagined it would be. If and when I do drink now I try to drink wine or a vodka soda with lime. Sidenote: I recently attended a fabulous milestone birthday for a friend with delicious food and an open bar and here I was not drinking. Couldn’t possibly be worse, right? So I went and drank soda water with lime and guess what . . . I had a blast and didn’t wake up with a hangover. TRUE STORY.

So what it comes down to is this. A vacation, long-weekend, or special occasion doesn’t have to mess with your flow. I, the queen of messing up my flow, will be leading the way to new possibilities starting with these truth bombs above.

What are your tactics for maintaining your routine away from home?

Comment below and let’s get this conversation started.

Love, Lashes, and Lipstick,

xoxo,
BC

This is so helpful! Thanks! I always try to keep snacks and options on me even on a daily basis too. Halos, homemade granola, energy/ protein balls, and water or water bottles are helpful to have on you too.

Being prepared is a huge help for me when I’m on the go. And I too take my water bottle with me everywhere, even the airport. It’s a lifesaver when I travel.

I am admittedly pretty shit at this. I have never been too overweight, and that is because I live my life on a 24/7 health kick. I don’t GO on a diet because I never left one.

But that pretty much goes out the window when I’m on vacay…and I do travel a lot. It’s harder and harder to come back from those indulgences as I get older, so I appreciated your blog. I’m definitely not cued in to bringing my Lara Bars on vacay 🙂 since enjoying international food is a big part of it for me. But I like your idea of mitigating damage by just doing one cheat meal per day. I’m going to try that!

You also weren’t that big into gyming it on vacation, which I get, but I’ve got something for this.
1. Resistance bands. Cheap, portable, you can now workout anywhere.
2. I save two no-weights workouts to my phone. I alternate them on my vacay days. A quick 20 minute blast before I shower and go out makes me feel much less guilty about any indulgences, and something is better than nothing. I have a 4 move one that incorporates my suitcase as weight!

Great blog, keep it up!

Awww thanks so much, Jeff. It’s crazy to think that even someone as disciplined as you might struggle with this during times of travel, but it’s nice to know we are all human and we’re not alone. Your travel work out suggestions are great ideas and you are so right, with all the mobile apps out there working out on the go or while traveling has been made much easier. Now to be consistent, LOL. Making the transition to a 24/7 health kick after years of bad habits is a challenge but very possible. It’s all about choice. #lifegoals
